Get Your Car Ready for Spring on Long Island
The weather is getting warmer, the snow is beginning to melt, the flowers are beginning to bloom (not to mention allergies getting worse) and that means the Spring Season is finally on here! And just like how your house may need spring-cleaning – so does your car! Here are a few things to check to make sure your car is in tip-top shape for Spring!
Check Your Battery:
During the wintertime, your battery works extra hard due to the cold weather. In fact, winter stress can compromise their performance up to 60 percent! In the spring, it’s recommended to test your battery to determine if it should be replaced especially those more than three years old.
Tire Pressure:
It’s common knowledge that cold weather can reduce tire pressure, so make sure all tires, including the spare, are properly inflated and balanced. If you aren’t sure what the proper air pressure should be referred to your owners manual.
Brakes:
After a season of snow and ice, where stopping short or skidding on black ice can occur, it’s important to double check that your brake system including that the line is intact and that your fluids are at the proper levels.
Suspension & Wheel Alignment:
In the winter the numerous potholes from erosion can cause havoc on your shocks. It’s important to have them inspected to make sure there won’t be further damage or problems in the future.
Windshield Wipers: Believe it or not, the best time to change your windshield wipers is every six months! Especially after all the salt, dirt and snow during the winter, windshield wipers can lose their effectiveness. Changing them will ensure that you can see during those “April Showers.”
Actually Clean: Take your car to the car wash and make sure they clean the undercarriage where road salt can eat away or corrode the metal. Also, consider cleaning the interior! We understand that not wanting to clean the inside of your car out when it’s freezing but extra weight can increase the amount of gas you use. By taking the time you clean, you’ll ultimately increase your gas mileage.
Even when taking these necessary precautions in Spring, accidents sometimes happen. If you ever need roadside assistance or a tow anywhere on Long Island, feel free to Elite Towing & Transport Inc. a call at (631) 737-8439 or fill out the contact form.
